Today, August 12th, Fraport Bulgaria became a signatory to the Memorandum of Cooperation & Partnership among institutions of higher education and prominent representatives of the local business. The joint initiative driven by the Municipality of Varna aims to support the development of Varna as a “City of Knowledge” and infuse sustainable links between all stakeholders in the community who have committed their willingness to rebrand the city through joint action and transform it into a modern, green and high-tech capital in the areas of transport and tourism, as well as medical, IT and marine industries.

Dimitar Kostadinov, Director of Varna Airport, took part in the official signing ceremony and confirmed that „Although the year and the summer season have been extremely difficult for the airport, we are working hard and making great efforts to remain a strong player in the local community, adhere to all safety rules and measures, so to be able to ensure a safe, comfortable and easy travel to all of our airport guests. And although the traffic decline is very significant -57% for Varna Airport from the beginning of the year to the end of July, and -73% for both Varna and Burgas airports together for the same period, we remain optimistic and even more committed to partner with the local community towards strengthening the position, accessibility and connectivity of the city of Varna and, in this way, ensuring its long-term development.”

Despite the decline of passenger traffic in the summer months, the passenger numbers at Varna Airport have grown from over 12 000 serviced passengers in May, to over 31 000 in June and over 103 000 in the past month.

At Burgas Airport, over 1 500 passengers were serviced in May, over 6 200 June, and over 121 000 in July.

“Given the dynamics of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country and the restrictions from different countries when traveling from/to Bulgaria, it is extremely difficult to make accurate forecasts, even for the current month, because the situation is extremely unpredictable. The trend from July is expected to continue in August, with a possible minimal improvement in the decline in traffic given the newly launched 9 new year-round destinations operated by Wizz Air at Varna Airport,” added the Airport Director.
