Airport Carbon Accreditation - Level 2 Reduction

Fraport Twin Star's airports in Varna and Burgas receive Airport Carbon Accreditation Level 2 Reduction

In recognition of the airports’ actions to map and reduce CO₂ emissions as part of the global airport industry’s response to the challenge of Climate Change, Varna Airport and Burgas Airport became officially certified by Airports Council International – Europe and WSP accreditation body and independent administrator verifier.

Airport Carbon Accreditation is the only institutionally-endorsed, global carbon management certification program for airports. It independently assesses and recognizes the efforts of airports to manage and reduce their carbon emissions through 6 levels of certification: ‘Mapping’, ‘Reduction’, ‘Optimization’, ‘Neutrality’, ‘Transformation’ and ‘Transition’.

After receiving Level 1: Mapping accreditation in 2019, the Fraport Twin Star airports invested considerable attention in reducing the company’s carbon footprint through various actions aimed to optimize the consumption of energy and fuels. In 2018, the activities of both airports generated 8,033 tons of CO₂ emissions. Current estimates show that by 2030, the carbon footprint of Varna and Burgas airports will increase by 22% to reach 13,000 tons per year. As an environmentally responsible company, Fraport Twin Star set itself a Goal: To reduce CO₂ emissions to the levels of 2015 by year 2030. This is currently being achieved through a wide range of specific energy-saving measures and use of renewable energy sources.

Fraport Twin Star commits to undertake a series of sustainable projects in the direction of reducing its carbon footprint.
Becoming Airport Carbon Accredited at the Reduction level requires the airports have a defined carbon management plan and proven progress towards a reduced carbon footprint, as well as providing evidence of effective carbon management procedures including target setting and demonstrating a reduction in CO₂ emissions against a 3-year rolling average.

Varna Airport and Burgas Airport have clearly set out to pursue Level 3: Optimization. This will be possible by focusing future actions on further optimization of electricity consumption, fuel utilization and waste and dangerous goods management.

“This accreditation is very important for us. With the attainment of Level 2 Carbon Accreditation, we are already looking forward to achieving Level 3 progress. Carbon reduction and even Carbon neutrality is something we are really striving to achieve at Burgas and Varna and we are really applying a combination of efficiency measures,” stated Dr.  Frank Quante, CEO of Fraport Bulgaria.

In order to achieve the next level, the airports are making serious investments in light replacement projects and photovoltaic installations in the next few years. Through various promotional measures, the company actively engages its employees, airport guests, partners and other stakeholders to equally commit to the goal by their own, individual and collective day-to-day contribution to the responsible use of energy, fuel and water.

Fraport Twin Star remains confident that through its joint efforts, the company will be able to raise its environmental management standards, improve its efficiency and overall performance at its two green airports in Varna and in Burgas.
