Varna Airport – Home to the Only Operational Hangar Along the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast
On November 26, 2020, Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD successfully changed the designation of the Hangar, located in Terminal 3, receiving a Use Permit from the Directorate for National Construction Control for its commissioning.
The building was originally contsructed in 1982 and used as an aircraft hangar, but after Varna Airport was concessioned, the hangar and its service building were transformed into a Temporary Passenger Service Terminal, to remain as such until the completion of the construction of the new passenger terminal.
After almost 4 years of reconstruction of the temporary terminal for arriving and departing passengers, today the hangar of Varna Airport can now be used to house up to 3 aircraft for maintenance and repair or other equipment.
The Investment in the Repair Works Amounts to Almost € 1 million
Since 2016, the total value of the investments and repair works has reached € 910,000.

The hangar is a one-room building with an entirely reinforced concrete structure with dimensions of 100 m. in length, 60 m. in width and 14.85 m. in height, and а total built-up area of 6,106 sq. m.
Inside the hanger, there are movable containers allowing for quick rearrangement of the internal space with the purpose of creating service, technical and office premises for administrative staff. In The adjacent building contains offices and staff rooms.
Along the entire length of the southern façade of Hangar 1, there are sliding segment doors with a height equaling that of the façade, making it possible to open areas with the required width in specific cases. The terrain in front of the hangar door is level with the pavement indoors.
The eastern and western facades of the hangar have significant glass installations that allow natural light to enter the maintenance facility areas. The natural light is complemented by evenly dispersed hatches for smoke and heat vents in the roof plane.
The pavement in the main hall of the hangar is designed with a minimum slope - 0.5% north to south in order to ensure natural drainage, reliability and safe operation. Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD invests in reducing electricity consumption by purchasing new energy-saving equipment. The lighting of the hangar has been replaced and the old and energy-intensive lighting fixtures have been replaced with modern LEDs, which are not only significantly more economical, but also provide better lighting.
The hangar is equipped to ensure compliance with the requirements for safety and health at the workplace and is suitable repair works, providing an appropriate microclimate and lighting, fire safety requirements and all necessary conditions for immediate evacuation, in the event of an emergency.
