The unprecedented decline in international travel, estimated to be more than 70% less than last year, and various travel restrictions have significantly reduced passenger traffic, the situation currently continues to restrict the free movement of people and this undoubtedly affects tourism, Mariana Nikolova, Minister of Tourism of Republic of Bulgaria and Deputy Prime Minister said during a working meeting to Frank Quante, Chief Executive Officer of Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD.

Delays in international travel and visits will have a devastating effect on tourism and the national economies of a number of countries around the world. More needs to be done to adapt travel restrictions to address the specific health risks that some passengers may pose to themselves and their destinations, while making travel easier for those who meet the requirements. In this line of thought, it is important for us as a ministry to work closely with you, to discuss the formulation and implementation of those measures and policies that will ensure the preservation of accessibility and the availability of good transport connections, so that our country remains a preferred tourist destination, Mariana Nikolova stressed during the conversation.

The Ministry of Tourism is making all necessary efforts to deal with the crisis in the sector and to preserve and promote the flow of tourists to our country. The total drop in flights at Varna and Burgas airports is about 80 percent, informed Mr. Quante.

He thanked the government for introducing the 60/40 measure and added that they are in constant contact with the Ministry of Transport, Information Technology and Communications. According to him, preparations are currently underway for next year, with positive trends in flight reservations from some destinations, such as the Polish and German markets, bookings are almost at the levels of 2019. We are also preparing to create an opportunity for both airports to perform rapid tests, explained the executive director. He clarified that an organization for testing passengers with PCR has already been established at the airports.
