Burgas Airport celebrates its 95th anniversary

The airport, called "The Sunniest Airport on the Black Sea Coast" and, for a year now, the "Airport of the Roses", continues to be the second busiest airport in Bulgaria

Burgas Airport, part of Fraport Twin Star, celebrates its 95th anniversary today! On June 27, 1927, the construction of the airport began by the French company "SIDNA", whose direct successor is the current Air France, and in 1941 it was finally ceded to the Bulgarian state.

Burgas Airport is significant for Bulgarian aviation. On June 29, 1947, the Sofia - Burgas route with the Bulgarian passenger aircraft Junkers Ju 52 / 3m was the first line of Bulgarian airlines of the former Directorate of Air Communications.

Burgas Airport is unique with another interesting fact. It is the airport with the largest number of sunny days in Europe, earning it the nickname "The Sunniest Airport on the Black Sea Coast". It has the fourth-longest runway in the Balkans (3200 m), and the airport is an important transport hub in Southeast Europe with its many civil and cargo flights.

On November 10, 2006, Burgas Airport and Varna Airport were awarded a 35-year concession to the German-Bulgarian company Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD. The concession includes investments totaling EUR 403 million, which today are going according to plan, incl. with measures targeting ESG solutions.

Undoubtedly, the most successful year in passenger service was 2018, when the airport served a total of 3,255,568 passengers. To date, there is an active pace of recovery of passenger traffic after the pandemic that severely affected aviation in recent years.

To date, intensive work continues on launching more direct international flights, and in 2022 from Burgas Airport, everyone can travel to 77 destinations in 26 countries. On 15th June, the summer base of Wizz Air at Burgas Airport was reopened with an aircraft that will serve a huge part of a total of 16 attractive European destinations.

With the birthday, the Fraport Twin Star team is grateful for all the support and collaboration with all state authorities, the municipality of Burgas, business partners, and very much all current and former employees: Thank you!
