Burgas Airport Reinforces Its Key Role in Enhancing Air Connectivity Between Bulgaria and Poland

Following the successful working visit of representatives from the Pomeranian Voivodeship and the city of Gdansk to Burgas in June 2023, the cooperation between the two regions is entering a new, even more dynamic phase. Between June 12–14, 2023, led by the Deputy Marshal of the Pomeranian Voivodeship, Mr. Leszek Bonna, the Polish guests and their Bulgarian hosts signed a number of bilateral agreements covering regional, economic, academic, and tourism cooperation. The Polish delegation also included representatives from universities and various institutions. A joint action plan between Gdansk and Burgas was signed, as well as a cooperation agreement between the Pomeranian Voivodeship and the Association of Black Sea Municipalities in Bulgaria. Additional agreements were signed between the National Sports Academy in Sofia and the Academy of Physical Education in Gdansk, between Trakia University and the University of Gdansk, and between “Asen Zlatarov” University and the Medical University of Gdansk.

A new impetus to the bilateral partnership is now being given by the visit of a delegation from the city of Burgas to Gdansk, which begins today. The occasion is the official opening ceremony of the new air connection season between the two cities. On 2 June, Gdansk Airport will welcome the first direct flight from Burgas for the year, with the event marked by a water salute, festive passenger reception, and a special press conference featuring the mayors of Burgas and Gdansk, the Ambassador of the Republic of Bulgaria to Poland, Mrs. Margarita Ganeva, as well as representatives of the Pomeranian Voivodeship.

The launch of scheduled flights as of early June 2025 opens new opportunities for a more active exchange between the regions. The development of air connectivity is a key driver for boosting tourism, business, cultural, and academic ties between the partner cities.

The visit of the Burgas delegation to Gdansk is expected to give new impetus to the cooperation, with additional initiatives for promoting both regions to be discussed.

The partnership between the two cities serves as an example of a successful cross-border cooperation model within the European Union. With growing interest in the Black Sea and Baltic regions, Burgas and Gdansk demonstrate how strategic inter-municipal links can generate sustainable growth, create more opportunities for citizens, and ensure active international visibility.

During the 2025 summer season, Burgas Airport will offer direct flights to 9 destinations in Poland – Warsaw, Gdansk, Katowice, Krakow, Lodz, Lublin, Poznan, Rzeszow, and Wroclaw – further solidifying its position as a key gateway for Bulgarian-Polish air connectivity. A total of 9 airlines operate flights between Burgas and Poland: Ryanair, LOT - Polish Airlines, Buzz, WizzAir, Enter Air, AMC Aviation, Electra Airways, Smartwings, and Sky Up. The flight program officially began on 30 March with the arrival of the first scheduled flight from Krakow, operated by Ryanair. In recent years, Poland has established itself as a leading international market for Burgas Airport, with passenger traffic now surpassing 2019 levels.
