Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD, the concessionaire of Burgas Airport and Varna Airport, received a Golden Prize for its overall contribution to welcoming and sending off tourists and to promoting Bulgaria as an attractive tourism destination during the annual awards ceremony organised by Destination Bulgaria magazine. The ceremony took place on 25 September at the Central Military Club in Sofia and brought together representatives of the tourism industry, institutions, businesses and professionals from across the sector.
The distinction marks the second consecutive year in which Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD has been recognised by Destination Bulgaria. In 2025, the company received a Golden Prize for its contribution to the development of tourism and the promotion of Bulgaria as a desired tourist destination.
The 2026 award recognises the company’s long-term commitment to the development of Bulgarian tourism through improved air connectivity, continuous investment in airport infrastructure, enhancement of the passenger experience and active promotion of Burgas, Varna and the Bulgarian Black Sea region on international markets. Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD continues to work closely with airlines, tour operators, municipalities, tourism organisations and other industry partners to attract new routes, strengthen existing markets and create additional opportunities for travel to Bulgaria. Earlier this month, Burgas Airport and Varna Airport have already welcomed more than 3 million passengers combined.
Elevating the passenger experience at both airports by constant improvements is a key element of this approach. Among the most visible examples are the award-winning Gate Garden areas at Burgas Airport and Varna Airport, which offer passengers a distinctive open-air environment and contribute to a more comfortable and memorable airport journey. The concept reflects the company’s ambition for the holiday experience to begin at the airport and to remain positive until the passenger’s departure from Bulgaria.
At the same time, Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD continues to make significant investments in the long-term development of the two airports. One of the most important projects is the full rehabilitation of the runway at Burgas Airport in April 2026, representing the largest standalone private investment in airport infrastructure in Bulgaria. The project strengthens the airport’s safety, reliability and operational capabilities and supports its long-term role as one of the main gateways to Bulgaria’s Black Sea tourism region.
Air connectivity remains another major priority. The company regularly promotes Burgas Airport, Varna Airport and Bulgarian Black Sea coast at leading international aviation forums, including Routes events, where its teams meet directly with existing and prospective airline partners. Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD has also developed a new incentive scheme to support the development of new routes and improve connectivity, while continuing its active support for the Fund for the Development of Burgas Airport and cooperation with regional and tourism stakeholders.
The company also supports initiatives aimed at increasing the international visibility of Bulgaria as a tourism destination, including traditional tourism events such as Erlebe Bulgarien, activities focused on important source markets such as: Poland, United Kingdom as well as other destination marketing initiatives. Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD has also supported Burgas in connection with its Eurovision ambitions and is preparing to contribute actively through airport operations, passenger experience, communication activities and dedicated events related to the international event.
“Receiving this Golden Prize for a second consecutive year is an important recognition of the work of our entire team at Burgas Airport and Varna Airport. For millions of visitors, our airports are among their first and last impressions of Bulgaria, and this gives us both a responsibility and an opportunity. We will continue to invest in infrastructure, passenger experience and connectivity, while working together with our partners across the tourism sector to strengthen Bulgaria’s visibility and competitiveness as an international destination,” said Michael Reusch, Chief Executive Officer of Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD.
The annual awards of Destination Bulgaria magazine recognise organisations, institutions and professionals whose work contributes to the development of the tourism sector and to the promotion of Bulgaria as an attractive tourism destination.
The award recognizes Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD’s long-standing commitment to advancing Bulgarian tourism and fulfilling its mission: “Connecting Varna and Burgas with the world.”
