Burgas Airport and Varna Airport Served a Total of 3.7 Million Passengers in 2025

During the past year, the airports in Burgas and Varna jointly recorded an 11% increase in traffic compared to 2024, welcoming a total of 3.7 million passengers and handling over 27,000 aircraft movements operated by 64 Bulgarian and international airlines, performing charter and scheduled flights to more than 90 destinations across Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa.

For the first time since 2019, Burgas Airport welcomed its 1,000,000th passenger for 2025 as early as July. The milestone was celebrated on July 31, and throughout the year, flight programs of  51 airlines  to  67 destinations  were operated. The airport served  1.8 million passengers  in total.

Since  October 30, 2025,  the airport has been closed for flights due to a full runway rehabilitation  -  the most significant investment in the airport’s modern history, worth  over €50 million.

The top five countries by passenger numbers at Burgas Airport in 2025 were:  Poland  (409,000),  the  United Kingdom  (395,000),  the Czech Republic  (222,000),  Germany  (213,000), and  Israel  (99,000). The leading five destinations from Burgas included:  London, Prague, Katowice, Tel Aviv,  and  Warsaw.  Three new airlines operated flights to and from Burgas Airport.  

A total of  13,274 aircraft movements  were handled, including  7,117 scheduled  and  4,143 charter flights. The highest number of charter flights served these five destinations:  Katowice, Prague, Warsaw, Tel Aviv, and Brno.

The busiest months were  July and August, with the peak day being  July 29, when 23,680 passengerspassed through the airport. In total,  731 tons of cargo and mail  were transported during the year.

The top five airlines by passenger numbers at “The  Sunniest  Airport on the Black Sea” in 2025 were:  Ryanair, Smartwings, Jet2.com, Electra Airways,  and  TUI Airways.

Varna Airport

On August 5, 2025, Varna Airport celebrated its 1,000,000th passenger of the year. Throughout the year, flight programs of  40 airlines  to  61 destinations  were operated, serving  over 1.8 million passengers.

The top five countries by passenger numbers were:  Germany  (596,000),  Bulgaria  (225,000),  the United Kingdom  (151,000),  Austria  (145,000), and  Poland  (142,000). The leading five destinations from Varna were:  Sofia, London, Vienna, Istanbul,  and  Frankfurt. New routes introduced last year included  Abu Dhabi and Linz, and six new airlines started operating flights to and from Varna Airport.

A total of  14,159 aircraft movements  were handled, including  10,674 scheduled  and  1,887 charter flights. The highest number of charter flights served these five destinations:  Katowice, Warsaw, Prague, Berlin, and Antalya.

The busiest months were  July and August, with the peak day being  August 12, when 16,252 passengerswere served. In total,  195 tons of cargo  were processed during the year.

The top five airlines by passenger numbers in 2025 were:  Wizz Air  (which based a second aircraft in April 2025 and upgraded both aircraft from Airbus A320 (180 seats) to Airbus A321neo (239 seats)),  Bulgaria Air, Turkish Airlines, Austrian Airlines,  and  Electra Airways.
