For the first time at a Bulgarian airport - a flight with electric turnaround

With an official celebratory event attended by media representatives, Varna Airport marked two significant milestones in its development: the celebration of Wizz Air’s third based aircraft at Varna Airport and the first electric turnaround at a Bulgarian airport.

On 15.06.2026, at 13:15 h., Varna Airport welcomed a flight arriving from the Hungarian capital Budapest, symbolically marking the beginning of a new chapter both in the development of the partnership between the airport and Wizz Air, and in the electrified transformation of ground handling operations at the airport.

As a special gesture to the passengers arriving from Budapest, each traveler received traditional Bulgarian lavender oil souvenirs as a keepsake from the event and their arrival in Varna.

The initiative represents an important step towards greener, more modern and sustainable airport operations and highlights the long-term vision for innovation and airport infrastructure development implemented by Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD.

The event also marked the expansion of Wizz Air’s presence at Varna Airport through the basing of the airline’s third aircraft. Wizz Air has now maintained a base at the seaside airport for nine years and, for the first time in its history, now offers flights on 22 routes to and from Varna Airport:  Berlin, Dortmund, Hahn, Hamburg, Memmingen, Nuremberg(Germany),  London Luton  (United Kingdom),  Tel Aviv  (Israel),  Eindhoven  (The Netherlands),  Charleroi  (Belgium),  Bratislava  (Slovakia),  Bergamo, Rome  (Italy),  Warsaw, Wroclaw, Gdansk, Katowice  (Poland),  Budapest, Debrecen(Hungary),  Athens  (Greece),  Paris Beauvais  (France), and  Barcelona  (Spain).

The official programme was opened with welcoming remarks by Dimitar Kostadinov, Director of Varna Airport, who greeted the guests and highlighted the importance of the strategic partnership between the airport and the airline for the development of regional air connectivity.

The ceremonial part of the event took place in the VIP Lounge at Terminal 1, where, in the presence of media representatives, a specially branded cake dedicated to Wizz Air’s third-based aircraft at Varna Airport was cut, while pink champagne, matching the airline’s corporate colour, was opened as a traditional celebratory gesture.

As part of the programme, presentations dedicated to the development of Wizz Air and the route connectivity of Varna Airport were delivered. A presentation on behalf of the airline was delivered by Salvatore Gabriele Imperiale, Corporate Communications Manager at Wizz Air, while a presentation on behalf of Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD was presented by Denitsa Milosavljevic, Director Aviation Business Development.
